Why normal regeneration may not begin

A DPF needs sufficient exhaust temperature and the vehicle ECU must see the required operating conditions before active regeneration can begin. Short, cold or interrupted journeys may not provide enough sustained load.

Requirements vary between vehicles. They can include adequate fuel level, normal coolant temperature, acceptable calculated soot loading, plausible pressure and temperature sensor readings and no faults that inhibit regeneration.

Some vehicles complete active regeneration during sustained road use. There is no universal rule that every vehicle must exceed one fixed speed or that the brake can never be touched. The correct criteria are manufacturer and vehicle specific.

What the tool does

The SP Diagnostics tool guides the technician to the supported regeneration function and requests the procedure through the vehicle ECU.

Before starting, the technician must check relevant fault codes and live data, soot loading, engine-oil level and condition, fuel level, coolant temperature and the safety of the working area.

Regeneration is not a universal repair.

Regeneration burns combustible soot. It does not remove non-combustible ash and cannot repair a cracked, melted or otherwise damaged filter. Sensor, EGR, injector, turbocharger and engine faults must be diagnosed and repaired.

Professional workflow

  1. Read fault codes and relevant live data.
  2. Confirm soot loading is within a safe regeneration range.
  3. Check oil, fuel, coolant temperature and sensor status.
  4. Place the vehicle in a safe environment away from combustible material.
  5. Initiate the supported regeneration procedure.
  6. Monitor temperatures and completion.
  7. Verify the result and investigate repeated regeneration requests.

Why a focused tool helps

DPF regeneration is commonly required by workshops that do not need a large general diagnostic platform. A purpose-built tool allows the technician to reach the procedure quickly, consult the application list and contact the free technical helpline when support is required.
