Why battery condition matters

The traction battery is one of the most valuable components in an electric vehicle. Its condition can influence usable range, vehicle value, ownership decisions, warranty discussions and fleet planning.

Age and mileage do not tell the complete story. Battery condition can also be affected by charging behaviour, operating temperature, usage pattern, battery chemistry and vehicle management.

State of Health information helps buyers and professional organisations make better-informed decisions about a used EV.

What State of Health means

State of Health is intended to describe the present condition or retained capability of a battery compared with a reference point, often the battery when new.

It is different from State of Charge, which only describes how full the battery is at the time of the assessment.

One percentage is not always the whole answer.

The calculation method, source data, vehicle context and supporting indicators matter. Reports should distinguish between manufacturer-reported values, directly measured data and calculated estimates.

Why EV buyers need it

A used EV may look excellent and have a complete service history, but the buyer can still have little visibility of battery condition. State of Health information can help compare vehicles, understand risk and assess whether the asking price is supported by the condition of the most valuable component.

Buying a used EV without battery information can be compared with buying a combustion vehicle without considering the engine.

Battery degradation explained

Lithium-ion batteries lose some usable capacity with age and use. The rate is not identical across all vehicles. Temperature, charging patterns, depth of discharge, rapid charging, storage state and battery management all influence the result. A lower State of Health is not automatically evidence of a fault; it has to be considered against vehicle age, mileage and the method used to derive the figure.

Supporting vehicle valuation

Traditional valuation relies on age, mileage, condition and history. EVs add another important factor. A dealer may use battery information to support a price, while a buyer may use it to compare otherwise similar vehicles. The report should inform the decision, not claim to determine the entire value on its own.
